Marcus Marcou: How To Self Release YOUR movie

Marcus Markou is more than prepared to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to his feature film debut, ‘Papadopoulos & Sons’ – so much so that he remortgaged his house so he could self distribute it in UK cinemas!

Getting nowhere working the traditional sales agent and distribution routes, Marcus’ plan was to put the movie into 10 cinemas across the country for just one week. Described as a “suicide mission” by many, Marcus prefers to think of it as a “guerilla marketing campaign”. And with a £60k opening weekend through Cineworld, a sale to the BBC and a 150 screen opening in Germany next month (poster above), he’s not doing badly so far!

Marcus is the epitome of DIY film making all the way to the end but even more impressive than actually creating and produding a quality British film, is the fact that he took matters into his own hands to ensure that it was seen the way that movies are supposed to be seen – in the cinema.

Self distribution is increasingly becoming a viable option for film makers in 2013. ‘Papadopoulos & Sons’ is proof positive of that, what’s even more surprising is, in Marcus’ own words, “It is possible”.
